Speakers: Dr. Thomas Butcher, Brookhaven National Labs
Dr. Butcher affirms the benefits of biodiesel. There is evidence that higher blends of biofuel are not detrimental to heating oil equipment from Brookhaven’s in-depth research. In fact, a study on leaking seal shafts comparing biodiesel blends to traditional heating oil showed no impact with higher blends of bioheat and in many cases there was less leaking.

Through NORA’s reauthorization Bioheat and specifically higher blends of Bioheat have been a key priority. B20 use is a current goal in the statute, and increasing to B50 by 2030, and B100 by 2050. In addition, ASTM 396 is in the approval process for 20% biodiesel to be the new spec for heating oil.
